City of Boston Finance Book
Background
The City of Boston is the capital of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and one of the oldest cities in the United States. It is known for its cultural and historical significance, and it is home to approximately 650,000 residents. The city’s budget office helps build and carry out the Mayor’s Operating Budget and Capital Plan, and its work “helps the City make smart investments, and aims to create a thriving, robust, safe and equitable Boston.”
The Challenge
The City of Boston needed help editing a financial budget book specifically to eliminate unclear or repetitive language. City leaders were also looking for editors to strategically evaluate the way content was delivered and offer suggestions for reformatting page layouts and using infographics to represent and condense key data.
The Process
Nova Arc met with the City of Boston to establish a workflow before kickoff and held weekly meetings to update on progress. The initial editing pass addressed primary focus points and language changes and flagged issues for further review. The second-round edit further tightened language, evaluated changes, and reviewed formatting and content organization. The final edit included a pass for any lingering errors. Once Nova Arc completed edits on the year’s financial budget book’s first volume, we reviewed the second and third volumes to suggest layouts, edits, and using visuals to represent data.
The Results
Nova Arc delivered clear edits for the budget book and practical, informed suggestions for page layout changes and visual data representations to increase clarity and readability.
